Talking

Wesley cast one last smile and nod in William direction before stepping smoothly out the door, shutting it softly behind him.

Out in the hall, he didn't move for a moment. That was Spike in there and as much as Wesley didn't know the vampire he knew what Spike was supposed to be like. And this was a far cry from what he ever would have pictured.

Also, he's trying desperately to stall going to Angel. He can only imagine he'll have to restrain the vampire from stalking off and scaring poor William even further. He'll have to come up with a way to stop it before things ever get to that. Honestly, he's a little surprised that Angel ever left the room in the first place.

Standing out here in the hall day was pointless though. Wesley screwed up his courage and turned, heading back down, allbeit a little slowly, and towards Angel's office. Best to just get the unpleasant talks over with now.

Angel was restless and annoyed. He didn't know what was going on, and no one he asked did either. Fred just told him to wait, they'd know soon, but that wasn't enough. She seemed to be nervously hiding something, too.

He had thought about finding Wesley, but he got caught up in that annoying thing called work that he simply had to get done. He thought about dumping it on someone else but at least it was keeping his mind off things, like the sudden reappearance of a strange-smelling but definitely familiar old face.

When a while had passed, his impatiences got the better of him and he stood up, not entirely sure where to go but sure he couldn't stay there and let Spike get away with whatever he was planning on doing. He stalked towards the door, forehead heavy and overcast as ever, and opened the office door.

Only to manage to walk straight into Wesley just seconds later.

Wesley couldn't stop the unexpected noise of surprise at suddenly finding the subject of his current interest in front of him and very nearly succeeding in knocking him into the floor.

He glared slightly at Angel as he stepped back, brushing down his shirt in a parody of straightening it out.

"Angel. I was just coming to look for you."

With the words, Wesley remembered just why he had been looking for Angel, a hint of dread coloring his expression. Lord, he did not want to do this.

"We need to talk."

In the moment of shock after managing to literally bump into someone, he didn't pay much attention to Wesley. He blamed the accident on being so distracted, because he wasn't aware before that things like that actually happened.

Still, it was probably at least partially Wesley's fault. It wasn't like Angel was really clumsy or something.

About then he realised Wes was talking, and quickly listened. "What?" he asked. "Talk? Oh, right. About Spike?" That name was practically spat out in something extremely close to disgust.

At least he didn't have to go very far from his office in the end.

Wesley nearly rolled his eyes at Angel. The vampire could be so trying sometimes...

"Yes, Angel. About Spike." He tried not to let his annoyance at Angel's tone when he spoke Spike's name show through. Instead, he just indicated with a nod towards Angel's office that they should speak inside, in private. "Why don't we go sit down?"

Not really seeing why they couldn't speak out here, Angel glared at nothing in particular but couldn't think of a reason for objecting. So, deciding already he wasn't going to like what he heard, he turns back the way he came to stride rather unwillingly into his office.

As soon as he was in there, his gaze turned sharply back to Wesley. Something had to be wrong. He wondered if Spike had escaped, which would be a blessing rather than something to be so serious about. He still hadn't got over the major annoyance that was Spike appearing right here.

"So what did he do?"

He had followed Angel into the office and made sure to shut the door behind them before giving his attention back to the vampire.

Instantly, he didn't like the look he was getting and had to fight the urge to bristle at the words, at the tone in Angel's voice. He couldn't stop himself narrowing his eyes at Angel, finding himself oddly protective over Will.

"Wi- Spike, didn't do anything." He fought down his rising irritation at Angel's behaviour. Child. "Let's just hold off the accusations for now, shall we? And sit down. There's rather a lot to go through."

He sat himself, looking up at Angel and waiting for him to do likewise. His tone left no room for arguements.

"Spike's done plenty," he pointed out, deftly ignoring how hypocritical that was when he'd done plenty more himself pre-soul.

He really didn't want to spend too much time conversing over this. Really, he knew it was because he could tell from the way Wes was acting that something was out of the ordinary and that never lead to good things.

Still, he sat down once Wes had done, reclining in his seat and folding his arms over his chest. "What's this about, Wes?" His tone hadn't let go of the irritated twinge. "Where is he?"

Wes dismissed Angel's irritated tone with an almost flippant one of his own.

"Up in one of the apartments, where he'll be staying indefinitely until things can be figured out."

He paused briefly, thinking over what to say though he'd now lost any urge he'd previously had to try and sugar coat this for Angel. Since Angel seemed not to want to talk about it, he may as well just get straight to the point. He fixed Angel with his gaze, braced for whatever reation he would get.

"He's human."

Somehow, Angel had known what he was going to say just seconds before he said it. After all, it was all quickly slipping into place. The scents that seemed strange as he wasn't expecting them. The fact that he'd died, been killed saving the world; Buffy had seen it herself.

The shanshu, it had to be. He jumped to that conclusion as his irritation jumped to anger. He sat up and then, deciding that wasn't enough, stood up. For a moment he just glowered, appearing not to have words for how appalled he was.

"What?" he said as he finally found his rather raised voice. "I mean... you've got to be kidding me."

Wesley sighed slightly, watching Angel but not moving to stand himself. He could understand Angel's upset, knew what conclusion Angel had jumped to because he couldn't help going there himself.

But still...he was finding he had little patience for Angel's antics right now.

"I'm not kidding you. I had Fred check him out. He is...entirely alive. What's more, he doesn't seem to remember anything from after his human life. He doesn't remember being Spike."

"Then maybe he isn't Spike. He could just be another demon. Or... a human, someone who looks like him, or..."

He was trying to reason it out, the sharp snap of anger still there but it was laced with desperation. He couldn't let himself believe it was true. Spike couldn't've got the shanshu. That wasn't... it just wasn't fair, it was meant to be him.

Still, his lame arguments made no sense even to his own ears so he fell silent for a second. He was starting to look like he'd enjoy hitting something about then. "It's not possible. He can't be alive. You've got it wrong."

After all, Wes was good at doing that.

"Angel..." Wesley began, trying for some empathy in his tone. "I know this is hard to hear. But I'm not wrong, ask Fred."

He resisted the urge to rub the bridge of his nose at the impending headache that talking to Angel when he was like this always seemed to bring on. Really, he'd like nothing more than to just go back his flat for a few hours of decent or semi-decent rest.

After quickly checking on Will, of course.

"Then it's magic. It's temporary, or something," he said. He had to keep reasoning.

Even if it was starting to be kind of useless. If Fred and Wesley both agreed, then it was hardly likely to be otherwise. After all, they were the brains.

The angry stance began to fade just a little, more dispair creeping into it. Then, though, his face hardened. "You've got to find out how this happened. What happened. I wouldn't put it past Spike for this to be just a big trick or something."

September 22 2005, 16:44:59 UTC 6 years ago

"I am going to try and figure out what's happened, yes. But I do believe that this isn't some act. You should have seen him, Angel, he was terrified."

He was still hard pressed to keep the anger out of his voice, trying to see it from Angel's view when what he wanted was to go into protective mode for Will, who was so pathetically helpless up there and against everything that was happening to him.

"I suppose you'd like me to put all my time into this?" Which was something Wes was entirely for and this time it was hope he tried to keep out of the tone.

"All your time. More. And the time of anyone else who can help."

Help Spike get back to normal and leave, that is. Perhaps there would still be a way to get him back into the undead lifestyle and away from them. This couldn't be the Shanshu, surely. It was Spike. Spike wasn't a hero. He was an annoying bastard who just wanted to get in Buffy's pants.

And he wasn't going to accept that it wasn't an act. Still, he didn't want to go and see him because, aside from knowing Wes would object strongly, he didn't want to have to face up to the fact it might be true.

It couldn't be true.

"I don't think we need to involve anyone else in this. I can take care of it."

He was already making to get back to his feet, everything he'd wanted said had been said. He was finding himself anxiously worried about Will.

"I think that's all then. Unless you have anything else?" He asked the question out of protocal more than any real interest in anything that Angel might say. He was already taking a step back towards the door.

"Just... get rid of him, Wes," he said. There was only a hint of malice there, too, and that was mostly for show. If Spike, this human Spike, wasn't around... then he could carry on working for the Shanshu. Otherwise there was no point. "Get him back to normal, yeah? And then get rid of him. He's trouble. I don't want him hurting my friends."

With Wesley leaving, he turned back to his desk. He'd get some stuff done, then he had to go and collapse up in his penthouse. This was far too much to think about, and every thought already was frustrating him.

At Angel's words, Wesley hesitated briefly. Get rid of him? Wes was hardly going to toss out someone so helpless and besides, everything he'd heard, Spike had gone out a hero. His lips tightened in a brief thin line, angry all over again, before he abruptly turned and half stalked from the room.

Whatever he was going to do to help Will, he may have to do it quickly or Angel might loose his patience and toss him out regardless. Someone who had saved the world deserved better than that. Beides, they didn't ignore the helpless, they helped them. Or, at least they had before they'd taken over an evil law firm...

It was best not to think about it too hard though. He headed down the halls and up the elevator, intent on checking on Will before doing anything else.
